Ride report by Simeon Orme It was one of those weekends where you wonder which direction you should go, as the weather forecast for Sunday was not brilliant and after writing the ride report for last Sunday ride where I was spoilt with day of sunshine which as been rare thing this Winter. Has I live in the upper part of Halton, its nice easy ride down through village to River Lune where I cross over it via the Iron Bridge, then followed the cycle path up the Lune Valley, in few places it was like obstacle course, with bridge being repair in Caton, there temporary one which you had walk over, then was dog walkers around Caton walking in middle of cycle path who can't hear a cycle bell and then there was tree that had fall across the cycle path near Bull Beck Bridge which I had lift my bike over. I was soon heading up the A683 through Claughton and then the B6480 which followed into Wray, I was first customer of the day at the Bridge House Farm Tearooms where I must apologize to you for not taking photo of the cake before eating half of it before remembering to take a photo of it. After my brew stop, I headed up the Hindburn Valley to Mill Houses where the snowdrops were out in full bloom at side of Russells Lane which I followed up to hamlet of Russells where turn on to Park Lane which is delightful gated lane down to B6480 which come a bit more interesting to ride along as you get nearer the B6480, as the County Council as not any maintenance work on this section of the lane for a few years which is not bad thing from the cyclist's view point its stops the motorist using as short cut. At junction of Park Lane with the B6480, I got talking to father and daughter who had been shooting clay pigeons in field next to B6480, who asking about the lane and the conversation got on condition of the land which is major problem for us folk who work land base industries as the land as not chance to dry out seen last July when it started to rain, which is starting to become a major problem with Spring get nearer each week. The thing is with ground soaking with to much water, it makes life difficult to get heavy machinery on to land like tractor to do any work because it causes more damage to soil structure of the land. I was soon back on my bike, following the B6480 through Tatham into Wennington where I turn on to Lodge Lane which I followed it over Melling Moor into Melling in the Lune Valley. In Melling, I headed down the A683 to Hornby where stop for coffee and cake at the Hornby Post Office Tearooms. After my brew stop in Hornby, I head back along the A683 through the village and then followed the lane down to the Loyn Bridge where cross back over the River Lune. Bridges are rare thing in the lower part of Lune Valley, the Loyn Bridge is the only road bridge cross the River Lune between Caton and Kirkby Lonsdale. The weather was starting to go downhill, with few snow showers as followed Fleet Lane, then Lea Lane up to Aughton Road, which I then followed through Aughton to the Kirkby Lonsdale Road which followed back to Halton.
