Ride report by Simeon Orne It was the last day of 2019, so decide to make most of day after having day from cycling on the Monday, I put the bike in the back of the car and headed up the Lune Valley to Kirkby Lonsdale where abandon the car for next several hours at the car park by Devil’s Bridge, yes I could of rode the bike up Kirkby Lonsdale which usual take me just over hour to do when I am super fit but at this of year, the number of day lights hours are limited so that was my reason for using the car. Any way there be frost overnight, so after try my hand again at bird photography, I hope you like the photo of thr black headed gull standing on Devil’s Bridge. I was careful for next few miles until the frost had thaw, I did not stop for brew in Kirkby Lonsdale as there notice on the front door of the usual cafe that go to saying they were close until next year, so did bother going looking for another cafe which would be open but continue on my journey through Kirkby Lonsdale and then followed the B6254 to Kearstwick where turn off it to followed the lanes up the valley. There some nice views, has slowly ride towards Ringmaden Park, one highlight for me in spring on this route up the Lune Valley, is the Bluebells in Fleshbeck Wood which usually are outstanding when they are in full bloom. The ride from Fleshbeck Wood is slow climb up to Ringmaden Park where main house dominate the landscape of this part valley. From Ringmaden Park, it was fairly easy ride down to Ringmaden Bridge, which I use to cross over River Lune, then short section on the A683, then detour through the quite lanes to Middleton Hall Bridge where I rejoin the A683 for next good mile before heading along Jordan Lane, yes you may notice that have decide to stay on tarmac for today ride, there are plenty off-road detours to make more interesting but with the ground conditions not being perfect, I decided to keep on the hard stuff, has followed Jordan Lane down to Holme Open Farm, then there was a bit climbing to do has I headed up Holme Fell. At summit of the climb, I stop for some lunch on a bench with view of the Howgills. After my lunch break, I made the mistake of not riding up the sunny side of Dentdale, my side of the dale was in the sun shadow, which make for colder ride following the lanes up Dentdale to Gawthrop, so did that many photos on my ride up the valley but I make up for it on the climb out of Dentdale. The ride down Barbondale Road into Barbondale was outstanding has you can see from the photo that took of my ride down the dale. Then it was fairly easy ride through the lanes to Casterton where rejoin the A683 for the ride back to Devil’s Bridge.
