9th March 2002: A ride from Sedbergh, report by Simeon Orme
Well we did not get far on this meet of the South Lakes Group to the nearest cafe in Sedbergh The Post horn. Well I should start at the beginning, I started the morning off hoping that the over night weather forecasts were not going be true, with gale force winds at up 70 mile per hour, wind and rain had be promise.
In Halton as I was putting the bike in the back of the van we only had light wind mix with a little bit of rain. So I hoped we might get a ride in going up Dentdale and going back over into Garsdale via Dent Station on the tarmac, this change of plan was due to the large amounts of rain we had over the last week and making ground conditions not ideal for off road cycling.
So as I made my up the Lune Valley to Sedbergh, which is about 22 miles from Halton and takes just over half a hour in the van. The weather conditions got slowly worst as I got nearer Sedbergh. So when I pull into the carpark at Sedbergh( GR: OS97 658921). I jump from my van to Don Dalton’s new jeep, to wait for Fed and Pat who had rang up to say they were going to be late and to decide if it worth get the bikes out, as we watch the rain getting heavier and the snow, slowly getting mix into it. We decided to retreat, to comfort of the Post Horn Cafe for morning coffee, as we were walking up the street to the cafe, we met Fred and Pat coming the other way in their car, so we stop to tell them where we were going and not to upload the bikes yet.
As we when into the post horn, the snow on the hilltops was starting to settle, so we ordered coffee and toasted teacakes and were so join by Fred and Pat. So we spent a good hour and half chatting about cycling and putting the world to right.
As the weather conditions had not improve, Don and myself decided to give cycling a miss and to retreated home to a warm fire. Fred and Pat headed off in the car towards Kendal but due to the weather conditions returned home.
