8th February 2003: A ride around  Longsleddale and Kentmere, report by Simeon Orme
With the Snowdrops starting to come into full bloom in northern England and with bit snow left on the ground from last week’s blizzards which hit the UK. Five members including myself met at the Leisure Centre in Kendal for the Group’s traditional early Spring trek up Lonsleddale and down Kentmere which take in the delights of the track (byway) from Sadgill over to Stile End in Kentmere, for you southern  folk  who don’t get into the lakes to often, its one those you must do.

With Pat and Fred off on another training camp to Spain, I had pleasure of Don, Ian Burns, Keith Mills and Christine company for the day. After making our way through Kendal via cycle track we headed up the A6  to the cafe at Morrisons for morning coffee and chat.

After coffee we head up through the lanes to Garnett Bridge and stopping to watch the River Sprint rocketing under the Bridge and after the photos had been taken, we headed off up Lonsleddale which is one of the nicest dales in the Lakes.

Has we got to Sadgill, it was get near lunch time, so we found shelter in Sadgill woods for lunch and as we were finishing, the wind stated to blown the rain up the valley.

For those of you who have not done this track before, the best way of doing it is from the Sadgill end, has you have steep climb which you have to push your bike up and then free wheel down to Stile End with views of the Kentmere horse shoe. After the push up to the top of the pass we caught up with some mountain bikers where some of Phil Cunningham old application forms would had been useful, has the RSF name was brought up in the chat we had with them.

At Stile End we headed down the valley to Wilf’s at Staveley for afternoon tea which another place you must go to when coming to the lakes. After we sampled the delights of Wilf’s we headed across the yard to Wheelbase the Cycle Superstore, where Christine tested out the latest mountain bikes.

We then headed back to Kendal through the lanes on the East side of the River Kent.
