Crossing over Borrow Beck
Ride report by Simeon Orme
After meeting at the car park, we headed to the cafe for morning coffee and a chat. As we just walk into the cafe, the cafe had suffer an electricity cut, which reduced us to ordering orange juice and scones, which did not go down so well.

After discussing the merits of drop handlebars over straight handlebars, this something to do with Don Dalton being the only member out of party of six to have them on his bike. So he had put up with comments about his bending bars and his Elizabeth Hurley jacket (which he was not wearing) from the rest of the party which included Fred ( a leader of RSF fashion) & Pat Lloyd, Geoff Bell and Chris from Rippon.

So we headed off up the Lune valley towards Borrowdale via Howgill Lane and the Fairmile Road which are part of the old Roman Road which travel up the valley to link up the Roman Fort at Low Borrowbridge. As it was warm sunny day we had fine views of the lakeland montains.

After crossing the A685, we made our way up Borrowdale ( to my surprise Geoff and Chris had not done this track which one of the best in the East Lakes as you can ride just about all of it) and stopping for lunch by Borrow Beck where the Breasthigh Road cross the steam.

After lunch we continue up the track to the A6, which we follow for about mile down towards Kendal to join the old Shap Road, which we follow back over into Borrowdale and up into Crookdale. At Hause Foot follow the bridleway up to the summit of Shap and cross over the A6 and follow the Old Shap Road down to the Old Wasdale Bridge. Just before the bridge the President punctured and few minutes later close cousins of the Scottish midge attacked which speed up repairs.

At the Bridge we took the bridle track down to Salterwaith which was wet under foot and hard to follow! ( If you are thinking of doing the track, its one to miss). We then rejoin the tarmac and follow the B6261 to Orton. We then stop at New Village Cafe  for afternoon tea.

Afterwards we returned to Sedbergh via Old Tebay, Tebay and the Fair Mile, with Chris leaving us at Low Borrowbridge to travel to Staveley where he was staying.
