12th Januray 2002: Longsleddale Area, report by Simeon Orme
With the group’s main regular riders away in Northern Cyprus at the Lancaster Thursdays riders training camp and with no other members turning up for the start, I made my way along the Kendal cycle track to the A6 and headed up into the hills.
After passing through Garth Row, I left the A6 and freewheel down to Garrnett Bridge. Then continue up the Longsleddale Valley (which is one of my favourite dales in the Lakes), with fine view of the River Sprint, I made my way up to Sadgill where the tarmac ends. I then cross over the river by the bridge and made my way through the farm yard to the start of the Stile End Pass which is a public by road, with sign post stating it was 1½ miles to Stile End. I continue along the track through Sadgill Wood and stopping a few times to look at the view on the way up. Near the top of the climb I met my first mountain biker of the day who was heading over to Longsleddale and back to Kentmere so I told him about the Fellowship.
A few minutes later I had to stop again for a mountain biking club to pass, as they speed down to Sadgill and then I continue up to the summit of the pass. After closing the gate at the top, I was disappoint not to see the fine views of Wray Crag and Shipman Knott as they were still cover my cloud. As I descent down to Stile End, I was rewarded with fine views of the Kentmere valley.
I rejoin the tarmac at High Lane and made way down the valley toward Stavely.
Where I stop for lunch and then after lunch continue down east side of the Kent Valley and back to Kendal.
